Rogue River Fishing Conditions 5-14-2017

Howdy peeps –

Weather looks to be improving for the next couple of weeks.  Water is on its way down with the water temp expected to start to increase.  Fish are coming in daily with some being caught – seems to still be a lot of wild fish caught with a few hatchery in there also.  If we go by years past, the best spring fishing should be starting shortly with the increased temperatures.  My schedule is wide open, but I expect spots to be filling up soon so if you’re looking to come down and drop a line, give me a call and let’s get together to hook up some of the best fighting fish in the world!

(And they taste pretty damn good also 😉 )

Long time no see, Fisherpeoples….

I have not been out yet, but I’m getting close. The RV Park asked me to check out and admin their WiFi network, so I’ve been working on that. If the current storm systems would blow over, I could install the last dish antenna and be done with it. But you’re probably not too concerned about that part…

Are they catching steelhead right now? Yes…and no. Some days are better than others. Nobody is going to be doing much catching until the current storms are over and the river starts going back down. Should bring in some fish…and I’d expect the first Chinook Salmon of the year will be caught within the next two or three weeks.

Rogue River Fishing Conditions

Hey Fisher People!

After a slow start to August, Rogue River Fishing Conditions are beginning to get a little better.  There have been a couple of 40+ lbers and several 30+ lbers caught recently, although the majority of the fish are still falling in the 15-25 lb category.  We’ve been getting a decent bite in the morning on the incoming tides, as well as another (sometimes stronger) bite in the afternoon on the outgoing.  With the higher temperatures in the bay, the fish are moving around a bit, but most bites are currently below the bridge and/or the green can.  Focusing on either can the south jetty channel or the north jetty channel near the cat houses can be your best bet for success!  Anchovies are still the primary bait although some fish are being caught on sardines and straight spinners.  Rememer:  every color is good as long as it’s green!  But I have seen some success with silver , chartreuse, blue, and even red/orange blades (although the locals will primarily use gold).  The water is pretty clear and I have seen some fish caught in the deeper channels by folks using flashers, but I don’t think it’s consistent enough to be using them full time – maybe explore using them during low light periods (morning/evening/clouds/fog), but with the water as clear as it is, too much flash can keep fish from investigating your bait.   If you insist on using flashers, keep it simple:  your greens/golds/whites/reds are your best bet.

Though the first part of August has been a bit slow – I see improvement coming in waves.  There’s plenty of fish stacking up – and more numbers means more bites!  The silvers should start showing up in greater numbers (remember you can only keep hatchery adipose fin-clipped coho) so the action should start heating up a lot!

Boating Etiquette

If you are bringing your own boat (and new people should always hire a guide for at least one day to learn how to be successful on this river) – please remember that there can be a lot of boats trolling on the water.  I’ve seen some horrific setups lately that contribute to a BAD time on the water.  I watched a party barge troll with the rods sticking straight up vertically which means they had to let out 70+ feet of line just to get their bait in the water – this is NOT GOOD.  When things get crowded out there with a lot of boats, your best bet to avoid problems is to put on a little heavier weight (2.5 oz to 3.5 oz) and let out 30-40 ft, keeping your line closer to your boat.  Too much line out means your fish has greater opportunity to run into the prop of another boat, cross over other lines, and it brings getting your lines wrapped around the prop of other boats.  I even witnessed one boat wrap so much line around their prop that they burned the motor  – and that can make for a very expensive and very NOT FUN day on the water.  Please remember that while you’re always trying to be in the best position to catch fish – there are many others attempting to do the same thing.  SHARE THE WATER and be courteous – you’ll have better day and so will everyone else!

Rogue River Fishing Conditions

Rogue River Fishing Conditions have been hit or miss.  We’ve had some days where it’s good and some days where nobody is catching anything.  Every day is different – but every day brings new into the bay.  Though the winds haven’t helped much, we’re still able to pull in some great fish!!

But when the winds die down…it has been FUN FUN FUN!!  A couple 30+ lb’ers and several fish between 20 and 30 lbs.  Pictures from the last week of some of the fish YOU COULD BE CATCHING are posted below!!

Every day is different here, but there are always fish in the bay.  We’re catching them on anchovies and/or sardines, as well as straight spinners – green and gold (or any combination there of seems to be the choice of all successful fishing).  Like most places:  ANY color is good as long as it’s green! (or gold…).    This is a river where experience counts – most people aren’t going to come here and be successful on their own without learning when and where these fish tend to congregate, and the best techniques to target them:  if you’re thinking about coming down on your own – hire a guide for a day to show you how to be successful – you’ll be MUCH happier in the long run.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip with us – be sure and call SOON – dates are filling up VERY quickly and if you want a chance at some of the best tasting and best fighting Kings ANYWHERE – now is the time!!  These fish will give you everything you want in a fight – that much I can assure you.

Fish are stacking up – it’s raining right now and we’re watching the water temps, but it looks like the temperature is going to hold high enough to keep the fish down low.  Fishing has been decent – caught 3 jacks and 2 adults with about 5 or 6 other takedowns that didn’t stick.  So if you’re thinking about coming up and catching some big fish…now would be a good time!  Call or book online – I have quite a few openings right now, but I expect them to fill up shortly.  Hope to see you soon!

Just to let everyone know – the water in the bay has warmed up and the fish are holding in the bay.  WE ARE CATCHING FISH.  It’s a little slow, but we are catching fish – most boats are at about 1-3 fish a day.  Some days are better than ever.

Howdy Howdy fisher people!  Time for an update on the Rogue River Fishing Conditions!

Rogue River Fishing Conditions:

After a very slow start to the spring Chinook salmon season, Rogue River Fishing Conditions seem to finally be picking up a little.  Over the last week, a lot more fish are being caught  – both hatchery and wild fish.  Fishing on the lower Rogue is entirely anchored up fishing from a boat or plunking from the shore using anchovies or straight spinners.  Just like everywhere else – any color is good as long as it’s green.  Gold or brass also seem to be performing well. It’s still a little slow at times, but fish are being caught.  For more info, check out the Oregon Fish & Wildlife report.

Bookings:

We still have quite a few openings for this year, but they’re starting to fill up.  So if you’re thinking about booking a trip or have been waiting for fish – now would be a great time!  Just give me a call at 541-441-0559, or send me an email at jtaylor@fishchinook.com and we’ll see if we can’t get you an experience that will last a lifetime!

New Boat:

I purchased a “new-to-me” boat recently.  It’s a 22′ Jerry’s Marine flat bottom.  I’m getting it ready to take out very soon (making sure the seats are comfortable and the boat is ready to perform well while we catch big lunkers 🙂  It’s a rear tiller 200 Yamaha boat and this will allow a lot more action in the fall when we’re side drifting for fall Chinooks and Cohos, and even more so when we’re going after winter/spring Steelhead. We are going to catch so many fish on board this boat, I’m almost giddy 🙂

New Boat

Wild Fish:

We hooked this fighting 20# king yesterday after about a 15 minute struggle to get to him to come to the boat!

Rogue River Fishing Conditions 3/8/2015

Well folks,

With these storms coming in right now, and the river elevating – we’re kind of at a standstill until we get a break in the weather.  I anticipate at the end of these storms we should get an influx of fish as the river goes back down to normal flow rates – it should be an exciting time for Springers!  The predictions for this year are mixed – there are some who are saying the drought 3 years ago is going to affect our return and survival rates – and then there are some who are pushing those effects off for another year.  I’m mixed – the ocean conditions were not ideal, but the estimates for other rivers seem to be slightly above average and I see no reason for the Rogue not to be within these same margins.  I expect a decent year with some bigger fish coming in late July/August.

Not a lot of springers have been caught as of yet – the weather and the river aren’t cooperating fully (and the beginning of the main run is still 3 weeks away).  Expect that to change after this last period of storms dissipate.  Bookings are beginning to fill up – so to ensure you get your chance at some of the best tasting and best fighting fish on the West Coast – book as soon as you can and we’ll work hard to get you into them!  Thanks for keeping up!

Hook ’em hard!

Rogue River Fishing Conditions 4/23/2015

Went out early with 2 riders.  Had a total of 4 take-downs – 3 on spinner bait and 1 on a straight spinner.  But they were fighters today and we only got to net 1 – about a 20 lb wild fish which was immediately released.  Boat next to us netted 2 keepers in the 15 lb range.  Another boat netted a 14 lb’er.  Those 3 fish were all caught on straight bait.

All in all – for spring fishing – it was a lot of fun!  Action going on pretty much daily right now – not a ton of action, but several boats are seeing at least a little action.

Come on down and we’ll see if we can’t find that fish with YOUR name on it!  Bookings are available!
