Rogue River Salmon Fishing 8-1-2017

Hey there Fisher Persons!

Without further delay – Rogue River Salmon Fishing for August 1, 2017:

We had a little bit of a lull where fishing was hit and miss – some days much better hitting than missing and sometimes just the opposite.  The last few days have seen a definite increase in catch rates, and bigger fish are starting to be caught.  Hit it at the right time with gold/green and these Rogue River Kings just might pull your rod off your boat!!

The fish are generally hitting both brined and fresh anchovies, with some starting to hit the spinners again.  Seen a few landed on Brad’s cut plugs filled with tuna – but I think that’s more of a Columbia River fishing thing than here on the Rogue – at least for most.  Not saying they won’t work here, but anchovies remain the bait of choice for this fishing system.

As we enter August, I expect to start seeing a few silvers and the fall run should really get into action.  I think there’s still going to be a few slow days out there, but I’m betting there’s going to be more great days than bad ones.  We don’t seem to have the total number of fish as we’ve had in years past, but the catch rate still seems to be about average to maybe slightly better than average – and these fish are definitely coming in HOT HOT HOT and ANGRY!  There’s still no better fighting fish in the world than Rogue River Salmon.

New Gear!

Picked up some Okuma Cold Water 303D Line Counter reels that are now loaded with about 300 ft of Maxima Ultragreen mono and backed by 800 ft of 65lb TuffLine braid.  So far, I’m really impressed with these reels.  The gearing is well made and the drag can really be dialed into.  I initially thought they were going to be a bit heavy, but they’ve been working pretty well so far.
