Due to issues with some of the website plugins, I’ve been slow to update the blog, but I’ll try and figure out the workaround for now to get people updated on current salmon fishing conditions for the Rogue River Bay.

Salmon Fishing

We’ve had some good days and slow days, some beautiful days, and some downright windy days, but overall, salmon are being caught every day in the Rogue River Bay – just not in the numbers we’re used to seeing. Salmon fishing in July tends to be typically on the slower side, and that is holding true this year, although the majority of the salmon caught seem to have good size to them. So the quality of the salmon caught is definitely an improvement from last year, which is very good. While salmon fishing has been on the slow side, the bay right now is full of Rogue River Salmon – the trick is getting them to bite. It’s difficult to say if they’re not biting well due to the unusually warm water in the river system, or they’ve been in the bay for a while and are hesitant to bite, or possibly the amount of bait fish (anchovies/needlefish) that are prevalent in the bay and they’re feeding on them nocturnally. Whether it’s any of those or all of those or some combination of those – it is making the salmon fishing slower, but we are catching some daily.

For me, I’ve altered my approach this year to include more brined bait than fresh (part of this is to compensate for the lack of really good bait available, and part is to try and determine what the salmon are looking for on a daily basis – just like any other animal, their preferences change day to day, and sometimes even hourly). Preliminary testing has gone well. I suppose we’ll see at season’s end whether my theories on choices hold up, but it’s looking good so far.

As far as fishing goes – I expect the numbers to continue to increase as we get closer to August/September. We’ve still got quite a few openings for the primetime months ahead – so if you’re looking to get out of the smoke encompassing Eastern Oregon or even the smoke just over the Coastal Mountains, Gold Beach has held steady with clean air and beautiful scenery :). I do expect bookings to increase substantially in the next few weeks, so if you’re looking to reserve primetime days, NOW is the right time. You can BOOK HERE ONLINE, or give me a call and we’ll see if we can’t hook you up. Hopefully, I see y’all soon 🙂
